Trammell's Health & Fitness Tips - Health, Fitness, Nutrition & Training Tips to Keep you Healthy and Motivated
Diabetes mellitus also known as insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus is a metabiolic disease caused by problems with blood sugar utilization.
Blood sugar, or glucose, is necessary for both anaerobic and aerobic metabolic pathways. Insulin helps make cell walls more permeable and promotes the entry of the large glucose molecule into the cells, where it can be used for energy.
So you have type 1 is IDDM and type 2 is NIDDM. IDDM diabetics usually depend on daily injections of insulin as their pancreas does not produce enough, if any, insulin.
NIDDM diabetics do manufacture insulin, but their cells have decreased insulin sensitivity and so do not accept glucose inside. NIDDM diabetics may or may not need to take insulin and may be able to manage their disease completely with diet and exercise. Exercise has an insulin like effect, assisting the entry of glucose into the cells and enhancing insulin sensitivity.
